Killdeer Nesting

Killdeer build their nests on the ground by scratching out a shallow depression in gravel, sand, or soil. They lay their well-camouflaged eggs directly in the scrape with minimal nesting materials. 

Killdeers are known for their dramatic distraction displays, in which they pretend to be injured to lure predators away from their vulnerable nests.

Both parents take turns incubating the eggs and caring for the chicks after they hatch.

This morning's visit the chicks took an unexpected wander into a horse pasture. Initially, everything was fine until one horse became intrigued by the tiny newcomers. This particular horse approached for a better glimpse, but their protective mother was not pleased and stood her ground. Realizing the horse wouldn't back down, she shielded her chicks under her wings, staying in place until the horse lost interest, allowing her little ones to resume their insect pursuit.

On the second day, one chick wandered too far from the nest and was nowhere to be found. However, by the third day, with Killdeer's family effort, they were able to locate the wayward explorer.

The Killdeer pair have returned to our pasture once more this year.
